Quotation marks

The quote character can be defined to be any printable or non-printable character. Printable characters are specified using their explicit character while non-printable characters are specified using hexadecimal byte values.

Quotation marks are assumed to be optional in each field but can be switched off entirely so that any characters other than delimiters are treated as data.

Quotation mark characters can also be removed entirely, so that they are not used to enclose data and also do not appear in the data itself. This can be useful if the quotation marking used in the file is both unnecessary and unreliable.

The default quote character is the double quote mark.

The ‘q’ and  ‘Q’ switches are used to define quotation behaviour.
