Unprintable characters

Unprintable characters can optionally be removed or replaced with a specified printable character.

This behaviour can be set separately for quoted data and unquoted data with the default behaviour to pass through characters unchanged.

The ‘z’ and  ‘Z’ switches are used to define this character zap behaviour.

A line feed or carriage return character encountered within a quoted or unquoted field value can be converted to the escape sequences \n and \r respectively. The default behaviour is to not convert these values and pass them through.

The ‘l’ and  ‘L’ switches are used to define this behaviour.

A carriage return character encountered outside of a quoted field value can optionally be suppressed. This can be used to ignore redundant carriage return characters inserted with new line characters.

The ‘R’ switch is used to ignore carriage returns.
