What is a catalog server?

A catalog server is a central server that operates as a meta-data repository and a portal for connecting to networks for operations and queries. Catalog servers also provide a reference point for remotely located edge servers.

In a production environment there will be three catalog servers to provide resilience and high-availability whereby these servers will synchronise data between themselves.

Note that catalog servers do not typically host any network nodes.
