What is a node type?

Each node in a network has a type which is one of:

  • Instance node. A physical server in the network.
  • Edge node. A logical edge point in the network.
  • Area node. A logical region of the network.

Area nodes allow edge nodes and other area nodes to be grouped into regions of the network and are the nodes used to primarily shape the network topology.

Edge nodes define the logical edges of a network and are used to group instance nodes co-located at a edge point.
