What is the difference between a global and central table?

Global and central tables are managed in the same way and the only difference is that a global table is replicated to all instance servers whereas a central table is not and is stored on the catalog servers only. Queries that join a local table with a global table can perform the join operation on an instance node whereas a join between a local table and central table must be performed on the catalog server; hence joins with central tables may take longer than joins with similar global tables. Central tables are used where security is of concern and data contained in those tables cannot be propagated beyond the catalog servers.
